Book Review: Alchemy by Chris James
Possibly one of the best books released this year
It is hard to write a review for such an amazing novel. A reviewer wants to ensure that he or she does it justice. I think most people will be hard pressed to find fault with Alchemy. In my opinion, Chris James has penned a fantastic story that switches almost seamlessly between the present (the trial) and the past.
The author has shown us that a well-written novel does not have to be stuffy and boring. The story flows effortlessly, and while the book feels authentic, it is never forced. Ordinarily, I don’t even read period novels, but this is so much more. It imparts an old-world modernism which is hard to articulate. Read it for yourself and I’m sure you will agree.
The story is not nearly as much about horror as you might think judging by the cover. In fact, you will probably be drawn in from the first page. It won’t be what you expected and that is a marvellous experience. There is no cliff-hanger at the end, but trust me, I do want to read more books in this series.
If you enjoy an intriguing blend of the supernatural and a good period mystery story, you should read Alchemy. Just don’t blame me if you don’t sleep again until you have finished reading this book. It is worth every star ….
